Maybe its Just Me

Today in class my professor made a comment that stuck with me throughout the day. We were on the subject of rape and he mentioned that some people did not believe that rape was a crime. He told us what some thought about women and rape he said;  they said,"when a woman is raped she should just lay back and enjoy it." As a female I thought that to be very sexist, as citizen of this country I thought that to be a very demeaning statement. What if its a man? Does it make the situation different or would the saying be "when a man gets sodomized he should just bend over and take it?" I think not haha.

Before 1920, women were technically considered subhuman to men.  If they were married there husbands basically owned them.  Whatever was in the woman's name was turned over to her husband, he had custody of almost everything. Almost 100 years have passed and it is sad that people are still in the mindset that women don't have a right to themselves. Although it may be hard to persuade some that women do have a right to their body, what do you think could be some measures or precautions that females can take to make sure the security of their rights are protected from those who want to have a right over their natural rights? Or can this ever be possible for females?

  1. I agree that women need to do something to ensure their rights are protected, in the recent elections we saw advocacy groups petition on behalf of women's rights ( for example concerning issues of birth control and abortion)and make national headlines for defending a woman's right to control her own body. Really the best thing women can do is to exercise their right of free speech and become politically outspoken to ensure their voices are not silenced in political conversations

  2. I agree with Corey on this one. The best way to promote any agenda in the wonderful world of politics is to organize, lobby, and hope to make noticeable impacts on elections. Once the constituency group of those who support a woman's right to her body grows large enough to predictably and seriously impact an election, those involved will see their efforts pay off.

  3. I agree with both Dom and Corey, but I also think we need to establish the contents of the natural rights you speak of. For example, Women ought to be paid equally as a man. By asserting and substantiating these rights the goal of this movement is more focused, it will have more substance.

  4. I agree with both Corey and Dominick that women need to be outspoken and promote how they feel in regards to not just this but all issues. However, I do disagree about lobbying the government in the attempt to get your side heard. Lobbying is a big problem in our country and it doesn't truly show the passion of the idea's the lobbyists are trying to show. If any group of people wants to get people to listen they should take to clear channels and the people in the government should be made to listen. Women's rights advocacy is growing and the worst thing in my opinion to do would be to fall in with the bad system currently in place. Although I do understand that attempting to go a higher road makes your goal that much harder to reach, but when you do you will feel much more satisfied.
